LCIH - Leo History

Especially for Suzanne, Tai H. and Mona.

The first Leo club was founded in 1957 by Jim Graver, the coach of the Abington High School, Pennsylvania baseball team.

The first Leo Club in Malaysia was founded in Ipoh on 2nd September, 1970 which was the Leo Club of Anderson.

We are indeed very proud that the first Leo Club in Malaysia was sponsored by Lions Club of Ipoh Host (LCIH).

Thereafter only in 1981 which is 11 years after the formation of the first Leo club did we form the Leo Club of Ave Maria Convent and Leo Club of Idris Shah Sec School on 14th April, 1981.

This was followed by the Leo Club of Sam Tet N.T.S. School on 18th August, 1988.

Our Leo Clubs has over the years grown through leaps and bounds.

We had a very senior Lion called Lion Khor Chee Kung who was active with the Leos for many years until he was known as Papa Leos.

Lion Khor has been a member of the Lions Club for more than fifty (50) years. Unfortunately due to ill health, he was now slowed down but his invaluable advice to the Leos will always be remembered by the Club.

Then in 2017, P. Velupillai joined LCIH. He was a retired Headmaster. With the encouragement from the Club President and Velu’s good relationship with the Principals’ of the Methodist Girl School and Main Convent Ipoh, LCIH manage to convince the two schools to form a Leo Club.

Many other Lion Clubs did try to form a Leo Club in those two schools but without success.

We are indeed indebted to Lion P. Velupillai and President Emily Kong for the formation of the two Leo Clubs.

It has taken us more than thirty (30) years to form new Leo Clubs.

We are now more passionate about our new clubs. PP T. Sriskanda a Lion of nearly thirty (30) years has only now come forward to assist the Leo Clubs.

Together with our new and young dynamic Lions like R. Jeyasingam, Wilson Wong, N. Rathakrishnan, Evonne Chen, Eugene Ong and Henna Tan we hope that the Leos under our care can achieve greater heights. We now have about three hundred (300) Leos under our guidance.

We sincerely hope to lead these Leos through the path of enlightenment in the field of humanitarian services.
